I want to share with you a clip from a speech given by the late Dr. Martin Luther King delivered 4 April 1967, Riverside Church, New York City. At that time, America was embroiled in a war with Vietnam. A war that put to use war chemicals such as Agent Orange to defoliate Vietnam in a operation called Operation Ranchhand. The consequence of these chemicals were to drive away not only the guerillas, but the villagers from their land, as their land and water was poisoned with DDT. Shortly after, India began its Green Revolution, using the surplus war chemicals produced by American corporations as agricultural chemicals in a plan that was hatched twenty years before in the designing of seeds of rice and wheat to go with their companion chemicals and synthetic fertilizers. Doctor King spoke eloquently that night and one year later to the day, he was killed. This was his message;
….”The words of the late John F. Kennedy come back to haunt us. Five years ago he said, “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” [Sustained applause] “Increasingly, by choice or by accident, this is the role our nation has taken; The role of those who make peaceful revolution impossible by refusing to give up the privileges and the pleasures that come from the immense profits of overseas investments. I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin [applause], we must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered. A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies.”
Perhaps you are just learning about the issue of genetically modified foods, or privatization of water, or land grabs from the powerless First Peoples all over the world. Perhaps you are angered, and tired of your anger being dispersed through creature comforts and distracted by the next blurb of news to pop up on your tv or Internet. If you feel in touch with our purpose, remember the words of Dr. Martin Luther King as stated above, “I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nationl must undergo a radical revolution of values.” This revolution starts with us, our relationship to our Self, and our relationship to our world.
